Handicapping
Why have handicapping?
Handicapping is a mechanism that allow players of
all standard to compete against each other on a fair
and equal basis, one unique aspect that separates
golf from many other sports.
What is a handicap?
A players handicap indicates their golf ability relative
to other players, the lower the number the better
the player.
In individual Stroke Play
competitions a players handicap is subtracted from
their gross score to produced their competition nett
score for comparison with other competitors. For example,
a player with a handicap of 14 who scores 86 will
have a nett score of 72.
The maximum handicap for men is 28, the maximum for
women and juniors is 36.
How to get a handicap
The Unified Handicapping System (UHS) is devised by
the Council of National Golf Unions (CONGU). The only
way to obtain an official CONGU® handicap is to
join a golf club, play three rounds and submit your
cards to the club committee.

Until you take the step of joining a
club, a number of companies offer handicap calculation
services. Two such companies are:
